Oil spills have been one of our main focuses in this project, and we continue to advocate for this serious issue. Oil spills are a significant cause of death and destruction in the ocean. The smallest oil spills add up and fish are very vulnerable to light petroleum leaks. Oil on the surface of the water can be a big issue because it blocks the sunlight for animals below, and reduces the level of dissolved oxygen. Additionally, when an animal inhales the oil, it can be detrimental to its health in various ways. It can slow a sea creature’s reproductive system as well as damage its habitat. Fishers remove more than 170 billion pounds of marine life each year due to the ever growing demand for seafood and sushi. Fish will be gone in 50 years if we keep fishing like this. That is why we need sustainable fishing practice. If we fish for specific species only during certain times of the year, allowing fish stocks to replenish themselves we could possibly save fish. Also, if we only use rod & reel fishing lines we would be catching one fish at a time, therefore only catching as much as we can carry. If we follow these practices before time runs out, fish might not go extinct. For more information, look at the link below.
